ABOUT XIANGQI

Xiangqi is an ancient Chinese board game. Now Xiangqi has been widely introduced to many places in the world. It is one of the five most popular mind sports games: Chess, Xiangqi, Go, Bridge and Draughts. The 1st World Mind Sports Games was held in 2008, and the Australian Women Xiangqi Team proudly won the silver medal in this world competition.

XIANGQI CLASS TUTOR

Xiangqi Class Tutor Zi Jun Huang was a professional Xiangqi player for ten years in China. She was the first China National Women Xiangqi Champion and gained the title of Xiangqi Grand Master. Twenty years ago Zi Jun Huang came to Australia. She had represented Australian and won the bronze medal at the 7th World Xiangqi Individual Championship and silver medal in The 1st World Mind Sports Games Team Competition.
During the last three years, Zi Jun Huang started xiangqi classes in Sydney and began to teach xiangqi. Besides Xiangqi, Mrs Huang has great working experience with children. She had a certificate in child care as well as the Certificate of Languages Teaching from Wollongong University. Zi Jun Huang is a specialised and qualified Xiangqi Teacher.

XIANGQI PIECES MOVE & CAPTURE

帅将 KING
King is the most important piece. If the King be captured, it means has lost the game. King move one step horizontally or vertically, and stay inside the Palace. Two Kings can’t face one another on the same file without other pieces between them.
The King captures in the same way as they move.

车 ROOK
Rook is the most powerful piece. It moves along the ranks and files on the board. Rook capture in the same way as they move.

马 HORSE
Horse moves one point vertically or horizontally and then one point diagonally away from its former position. It is important to note that the horse does not jump, if there were a piece lying on a point one point away horizontally or vertically from the horse, then the horse’s path of movement is blocked and it is unable to move in that direction. The Horse capture in the same way as they move.

炮 CANNON
Cannon moves in the same way as Rook do, it along the files and ranks. But Cannon captures are different, they need hop over one piece to capture the next piece.

士 ADVISER
Adviser move one step diagonally and may not leave the palace. This effectively means they can only move to five of the points within the palace. They serve to protect the King.
The Adviser capture in the same way as they move.

相象 ELEPHANT
Elephant move exactly two steps diagonally and may not jump over intervening pieces. They may not cross the river, thus they serve as defensive pieces. There are only seven points on the board for elephant to move. The Elephant capture in the same way as they move.

兵卒 PAWN
Pawn before cross the river,it only move one step forward.Once they have crossed the river, they can move forward and side way. Pawn is not allowed to go back. Pawn capture in the same way as they move.
